I wish you a Merry Christmas. I don’t mean this in the nonchalant, unthinking kind of way we often say it. This time of year “Merry Christmas” often has the emotional impact of “have a nice day.” I mean actually have a Merry Christmas!
Be “merry!” Be festive and of high spirits. Celebrate and be delightful. Make those around you happy and in high spirits themselves. Don’t just survive this time of the year, own it! Relish each and every moment. Don’t let Christmas pass you by without embracing all the merriment family, friends and more importantly Christ can bring!
Make Christ the actual center of your celebrations this year. Make this a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus and all the joy, peace and grace He brings. Don’t just attend a Christmas Eve service and light a candle! Make everyday a moment to consider the magnitude of what happened in that manger 2000 years ago. Let Jesus have your heart, mind and celebration this year.
Christmas is often said to be the most wonderful time of year and this is true…for most of of us. But it is also a difficult time of year for those estranged from family or faced with a circumstance which won’t allow them to celebrate in their own traditional way. But regardless of where Christmas finds you this year we all have the opportunity to choose Christ and the merriment His gift can produce within us.
Donald Defner tells the following story in his book “Seasonal Illustrations”
A television interviewer was walking streets of Tokyo at Christmas time. Much as in America, Christmas shopping is a big commercial success in Japan. The interviewer stopped one young woman on the sidewalk, and asked, “What is the meaning of Christmas?” Laughing, she responded, “I don’t know. Is that the day that Jesus died?” There was some truth in her answer.
Without a reason for the season, a reason which far surpasses lights, presents, snow and toys, we will never really enjoy the real “Merry” available in Christmas. Make it a truly Merry Christmas this year…
