Former Rep Anthony Weiner has been caught yet again in a sexting scandal. Why would a man risk so much to exchange explicit text messages? Such questions plague and torment the heart of those hurt by such conduct. How could someone have an affair, be addicted to pornography or pursue fantasy relationships via text or phone?
The answer is really pretty simple but it isn’t one many want to hear. All sexual sin is the result of the pursuit of legitimate sexual needs by illegitimate means. Sin is the choice to pursue a way of living outside of God’s plan for our life. The reason so many don’t have ears for the answer is because we live in a land of people determined to never call anything sin or “illegitimate” sexual behavior between consenting adults.
We are born with hormones! The feelings and needs produced within the human body by these hormones are legitimate and even placed there by God. Sex itself isn’t evil, wicked or wrong. Sex is a gift from God and should be seen as an opportunity for intimacy and celebration of the marriage covenant. Unless we understand the legitimacy of the needs produced in our body, we will never understand the motivation behind the illegitimate pursuit of them.
Mr Weiner had real needs just like every other man but chose to pursue these needs outside of God’s plan for his life and in so doing made a mess of his life; he has lost his position in congress, reputation and perhaps his marriage as well. Why did he do this? Why didn’t he pursue his needs within his marriage? We may never know but we do understand the legitimate needs at the root of his wrongful pursuit.
The needs produced by our hormones are only to be met inside the covenant of heterosexual marriage. There is no other place in which the meeting of these needs is legitimate.
CHRISTIANS SHOULD ENCOURAGE:
- Men and women to marry young
- Men and women to stay married
- Biblical teaching of sexuality in our churches…not “sex ed” but ethics of sex
- Grace to those who have made poor choices in the past
- Marriage mentoring where older men and women mentor younger men and women respectively on what it means to have a healthy marriage
Representative Weiner is being ridiculed and made the punchline of many jokes this week. May Christians never be so unloving as to join in the cruel treatment of a man who fell to temptation. Remember, we have all sinned and fallen short. Every man (and woman) is faced with sexual temptation and can understand the lure of the sin which befell Mr Weiner. So let’s pray, extend grace and love this man in hopes that he might repent and give his heart to Christ. May he find redemption and salvation in Christ.
“God, please be with Anthony Weiner and draw his heart to your own. May he realize his sins, repent, believe you died on the cross for his sins and give his life to you if he has not. Please heal his marriage as well. In Jesus name, Amen.”
