It is amazing how much a bouquet of flowers means to my daughter. She is a “girlie girl” if there ever was one and fresh flowers light up her world. Of course I love giving them to her and watching her little face light up. The feeling we receive when expressing love to our children is one of life’s great pleasures. As I enjoyed such a moment with my little girl today I began to wonder about the pleasure God feels when expressing His love for us. I have no doubt God loves loving us. If I am capable of loving and enjoying my children, I am certain God is capable of even greater feelings of joy.
I am certain we often fail to appreciate the love God has for each of us. His love is not a passing fancy or something hinged upon emotion. God has chosen to love us even when we were at our very worst (Romans 5:8). In fact, scripture teaches us that God loved us long before we were ever born. His love was enjoyed by each of us long before we ever had a chance to know what love was.
Before the foundation of the world God chose to bless us with every spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus. He chose to see us as holy and blameless. He chose to adopt us as His children. He chose to lavishly pour out His grace upon us in His Son Jesus Christ. He chose to save us from our sins and give us eternal life. He did so long before we were even born! God loved before we had the chance to make a decision to love Him. He loved us before we had the opportunity to earn it. His love is timeless and without condition.
I wonder how much it would change our self image and life in general to simply take a few moments each day to consider God’s love for us. I wonder how we might see ourselves differently if we took time to consider how much joy it gives God to demonstrate His love for us in the many blessings He extends each day.
I often take God’s love and blessings for granted and in the process miss the chance to love Him. He continually shows His love and I just take, take, take with seldom a word of thanks. How awful it must be to be taken for granted to such an awful extent. How tragic the missed opportunity to enjoy God in the acknowledgement of the love and blessings He extends.
May each of us be intentional to enjoy the joy God takes in each of us. May we revel in the love He continually extends to us. May we see ourselves as the beloved of God and ponder the joy He takes in making us so. May we see our value in our potential to fill God’s heart with the joy and love. May we more fully realize of how much it means to God’s heart when He chooses to bless and love us.
