Loneliness is a cruel burden we all face at one time or another. It leaves us feeling unsupported and unloved; we miss the much needed strength and encouragement of others. Often times we even feel the absence of the presence of God when we feel lonely and this exacerbates the feelings and insecurities associated with loneliness. Satan loves when we feel such weight of loneliness and uses these moments to attack and tempt us. But are Christians ever really alone?
Often times during worship at our church I close my eyes, lift my hands and sing my heart out. I don’t do this because I am moved by the sound of the music or even the lyrics of the song itself. I do this because my heart and spirit are connecting with the worship of Heaven. I close my eyes and imagine myself in the throne room of Heaven with angels and believers gathered around God lifting praise and worship to Him. I imagine myself connected to the church triumphant (those who are in Heaven) as I am with the church militant (those who are still living on earth). This connects my heart with God and the believers in my local congregation as well as with all the believers who lived before me. Such moments are powerful in my life. They remind me that in Jesus I am never alone. I am always living my faith in Christ with other believers.
We did not invent Christianity. We are not the first generation of believers and God willing we will not be the last. We are connected by our faith to a line of people who came before us. This connectivity leads to an important fact of faith; We do our faith in communion with others. We never follow Jesus as an island unto ourselves. Our relationship with Christ is one lived along side and with other Christians. Even when we don’t hear or see these believers around us.
Jesus died not for the one but for the many. Jesus was sent to die for the whole world! Those who have faith in the work of Jesus on the Cross avail themselves of the benefits of His Cross and are united together in a family of faith; a family which extends beyond the natural realm.
The next time you feel alone close your eyes, lift your hands, sing your heart out, quote scripture aloud, praise the Lord! Imagine yourself before the throne of heaven with your family of faith and you will never be alone!
