Some look around at the current news cycle and ask the question, “Has our nation gone crazy?” I look at it and wonder, “What took so long?”
When you live in an age Scripture calls “evil” (Galatians 1:4) the only mystery is why the wickedness contained therein hasn’t already caused society and civilization to implode. (By the way…every age from the fall until the return of Christ is an “evil” age) There comes a time when the weight of a nation’s sin is beyond the ability of mortal men to bear and God simply abandons the culture to its inglorious end. The weight of America’s sin is now more than it can bear.
Prince once sang, “Let’s go crazy” Unbeknownst to him America already had.
Look at the Midianites or any of the peoples the Israelites defeated upon entering the Promise Land. Take a peek into the history of the Romans, ancient Babylonians or Assyrians and consider how each raced to their demise. Society can only survive as long as it adheres to some kind of agreed upon moral code and apart from God morality has no foundation upon which to flourish.
Our nation is in the process of imploding because it has lost its reverence for God and His morality. Without genuine morality rooted in a right relationship with God there is nothing to stop our national journey to a wicked, narcissistic end. The time bomb has been ticking since July 4, 1776 and the founders knew this potential for our future.
“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable.” — George Washington
Religion and morality go hand in hand and without them no people remain a “people” for long. National unity is a product of faith and the morality it produces. Morality is rooted in a faith of some sort and society must agree upon such even if the majority do not adhere to the faith itself from which it springs. Otherwise, there is no societal norm from which to safely and effectively “do life.”
When a nation begins to debate what has traditionally been thought of as “obvious morality,” it is a short journey to disaster. We now live in a culture which celebrates its own wickedness as though it were a “glorious righteousness” only recently discovered.
Judeo/Christian faith has traditionally led us to an agreed upon morality even among those who adhered to neither the Christian or Jewish faith. Historical morality is now being rejected and cast aside for modern, secular ideals rooted in individual preference. To put it another way, the people of America now “do what is right in their own eyes.” Since the fall in Eden mankind has always embraced relativism and its false promise of freedom from all personal consequence for how one lives his or her life. Mankind has always been genuinely “hellbent” to free himself from God and any accountability for his life even if such a journey leads to absurd and irrational action along the way.
We live in a time when people may marry whomever they wish, use whatever bathroom they desire while feeling emboldened to call those who disagree with such choices hateful, judgmental and bigoted.
Rational thought must always be connected to objective truth if it is to remain rational. One does not call the man who considers himself a chicken a rational creature. It is obvious such a man is mentally ill for he is actually a man not a rooster. We put such individuals in mental hospitals because their thoughts concerning reality are disconnected from obvious, objective truth.
Objective truth isn’t difficult to come by for the sane man or woman. After all, God has given us five senses as well as a brain with which to comprehend His moral truth. Beyond these He has given each a heart upon which He has actually “written” moral truth. One never need ask someone if it is wrong to steal, lie or cheat for each of us feel a conviction of heart concerning the “wrongness” of each. The person who fails to feel such conviction is considered psychotic and in need of help.
Our culture has decided to embrace the irrationalism of the delusional man in an attempt to make him “feel” sane. Never mind the fact that to do so makes the entire culture itself insane.
We are now determined to make the man who considers himself a chicken quite at home in his delusion. We dare not tell such a man he is a “human being” for fear of offending both he and his perception of what is real. In the process culture itself has become delusional. In such a climate the person who embraces objective truth is considered the insane and irrational one deserving either pity or contempt.
For those of us left who remember what it was like to call a chicken a “chicken” and a man a “man” this current moment in our nation’s history is a tragic one.
In Genesis 12:3 God told Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” The United States has been blessed and been a blessing for much of its history because of the decision of its people to “bless God” and His church. The morality of our nation was shaped and influenced by the teachings of the Christian Scriptures. The faith of the church has been the bedrock upon which the moral foundation of our nation lay. The current lack of reverence for the Word of God and subsequent removal of our moral foundation is nothing short of national suicide.
Our popular culture believes itself to be enlightened, wise and benevolent but has instead become darkened, foolish and the exact opposite of the benevolent spirit it seeks to express.
Don’t expect pop culture to be its own savior from the mess it has created for our country. You won’t find the remedy for our current madness on the pages of TMZ. There is one hope for our present and the future we leave to our children. Our hope is faith in Jesus Christ and the obedience to God such faith produces. I’m not talking the nonsensical obedience to personal moral codes some perpetuated upon poor souls in days past. (There is no Biblical prohibition against playing dominoes or dancing.) But obedience to obvious morality written in each of our hearts and in the black and white of the Word of God.
The time to pray for a revival of faith in Christ is now! Genuine enlightenment, wisdom and love are only found in Jesus. Gimmicks, games and marketing are no replacement for humility, repentance and prayer. The enterprise we have made of the church in America will never replace the power of the Holy Spirit and what He can do among His people. We are now in desperate times but it isn’t the first time. Again and again our nation has faced such dark moments and historically these have been predecessors to great revival. May it be so once again. “Nothing is impossible with God.”
