If you are today asking, “What is wrong with the world?” The answer is a simple one; “I am.” This was the answer once given by G.K. Chesterton when asked this question and I dare say many of us would do well to respond in like fashion. We look at a world falling apart and ask, “How did this happen?” “How did we get to a place of such moral decay and godlessness?” The answer again is simple; we are the “how” and “why.” The world is broken and we are the cause. We willingly sinned and plunged the whole of creation into this nightmare. But, there is hope…
Most people are today looking for political, sociological, psychological and philosophical solutions to the world’s problems. Even the church has been guilty of this. In the United States we created the Moral Majority, political action committees and a myriad of other organizations to tackle our country’s problems. But no work of man can remedy our sin problem and the horror it produces.
“Jesus died on the cross to save mankind from sin and the power of sin. There is only one answer to our sin problem and all of the problems it produces…Jesus.”
Is God real? Does He exist? Does He have power. Is He interested in our life? The Bible answers yes to all of these questions. However, I often wonder if we really believe the Scriptures on these matters of faith. There seems to be an epidemic of religious atheism today within many of our churches and it is killing the faith of many. Like the children of Israel who asked for a golden calf when God tarried with Moses on Sinai, too many in our churches grow impatient and discouraged with God’s seeming lack of action in the midst of our current turmoil. Many are struggling to believe, trust and depend upon Him. But the problem isn’t God and it never has been. The problem is us. God is looking for a humble, repentant, faith filled people who will look to Him alone for revival and change. When He finds such a people His action will be swift and sure.
Until the church ceases to depend upon entertainment, philosophy, psychology and a myriad of other things to reach out to the masses, we will be powerless. God is looking across the earth today for a people who will be completely dependent upon Him. A people who will have faith. A people who will trust. A people who will take Him at His Word, trust His character and acknowledge His ability as well as His willingness to do what He has said He will do.
What is wrong with the world? I am. But, I pray that I will soon be a part of God’s solution instead! May you, I and every believer in Christ humble ourselves, pray and seek God’s face. May we lay aside our doubts and religious atheism for faith in a God who exists and rewards those who seek Him!
