It didn’t take long for lawmakers to demand stricter gun laws in light of the recent killings of a news reporter and her photographer by a disgruntled former co-worker. Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe didn’t let the bodies grow cold before launching into a tirade about how guns kills people. Such moments expose a simple truth seldom acknowledged by the mainstream: Mankind has a heart problem and Jesus Christ is the only remedy.
I shouldn’t give politicians too much grief for their secular and godless perspective. When you start from the place that mankind is “good at heart,” the natural propensity is to look outside of human beings for the cause of evil and wickedness. For those who hold such a worldview, the cause for evil behavior is always environmental or circumstantial and never the result of inward depravity.
The fact is very simple: Mankind is depraved, wicked and sinful at heart. Scripture makes this abundantly clear in Romans 3:10, “No one is righteous…not even one.” In the same chapter the Apostle Paul writes, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The Apostle John wrote in 1 John 2:8, “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.” Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked.” We are born sinners and our heart is black. The natural propensity for man is to live selfishly, sinfully and wickedly. Any goodness which might come from mankind is a departure from his natural state!
“Guns are not the problem…the heart of man is.”
We have a problem in this country but gun violence is simply a symptom of the greater problem. The real sickness in our country is the sinful heart of mankind. The only cure is the Cross of Jesus Christ.
Jesus offers forgiveness from sin and a new heart. Jesus offers us a new nature and a new propensity for action. For the believer in Christ there exists the desire to love, please and obey God as well as the desire to love and serve his fellow man. This is not to say Christians are without sin or incapable of great evil. However, the propensity of the Christian is much different from those apart from Christ. The propensity and desire of a genuine believer in Christ is love and life not murder and death.
Truth is a certainty and those who search for wisdom will find it. If you’re looking for a new heart and life I encourage you to look beyond environment, education and circumstance for none of these can ever change who you are. Look instead to Jesus Christ. Believe Jesus died for your sins and give your life to Him. Have faith in Jesus and follow Him! The result of such a decision will leave you genuinely changed forever!
