Today many are greatly troubled over who will be elected to the office of the presidency in 2016. The President of the United States is often thought of as the highest and most powerful office in the world. In fact, some would argue it is the highest and most powerful office in the history of the world. As a result we tend to believe our elections are of paramount importance. But are they of the importance we give them? Will the election of a politician be the salvation of our nation? Can an election save our country?
However one might think of the office of president, no authority is given unless it is given from “above.” This is what Jesus told Pontus Pilate when the latter said he had the power to release Jesus or have Him crucified (John 19:10). Regardless of the power one might believe he or she has in this world, there is only one Sovereign…God Himself.
Pundits attempt to decipher the meaning of votes cast and predict the upcoming tenor of our nation based on who might lead her the next four years. But, remember, there is no authority given by human beings to anyone; even if that office is a duly elected one. God alone decides who holds power.
Perhaps the leader God gives the United States in 2016 will be one we “deserve.” The difference between righteous and unrighteous leadership is a matter of the heart of a nation’s people.
Right now America is a haughty, proud, rebellious culture of death. Could anyone make an argument otherwise? Our national acquiescence to sins of all kinds is bad enough but above all else our nation is filled with grotesque idolatry. By and large our nation is driven by humanist and secularist ideologies. There is no sin so ugly as the sin of idolatry. God severely judged Israel for such sinfulness throughout her history.
Our hope as a nation is a simple one: We must believe God exists and rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). We must believe in God and pray. This of course requires a humility on our part. We are not our own god. We are accountable to the actual God who really does exist. We must turn from our futile attempts to find salvation in men, women, elections, public policy, laws, money or anything else outside of God Himself. We must see our nation’s troubles for what they really are and the place from where they truly come. We must once again believe in sin and the salvation from sin which only Christ and His Cross can bring. We must look for our national solutions from a spiritual source…God.
God once told Solomon that if His people ever found themselves under judgement because of sin they had a remedy at hand. If God’s people, the church, will humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, God will hear from Heaven and heal their land. Isn’t this interesting? The requisite for our national healing is repentance. yet this repentance is not on the part of the lost people separated from Christ but from those who already know Him…His church. This of course assumes the real problem is the church itself, God’s people, who are spiritually safe but practically dead. They know the truth but have dozed off to sleep and begun to live as those who are still in the dark.
I wonder how many Christians will vote this year in hopes of a national healing through the ballot box. Has there ever been a more blatant display of idolatry than to think a nation might be healed through the political choices of her people? I hope you will join with me and pray for a national revival and healing of our land. It is in humble repentance and prayer that true salvation is found
