Prayer and time in God’s Word are vital to a healthy relationship with Him. Jesus said we were to “abide in Him” in order to be spiritually fruitful and to do so means enjoying time with Him through prayer and meditation upon the Scriptures. To put it bluntly, a successful Christian is one who spends time regularly with Jesus. So how do we communicate this to our kids and encourage them to daily spend time with God?
I have two kids ages 3 and 1 both of whom are soon to have birthdays. In the past few months I have made an intentional effort to encourage their interest in both prayer and God’s Word. One of the ways I am doing this for my oldest is by allowing him to see my daily “quiet time” with God and participate in it with me.
I usually have my time with God in the morning before the house has “awakened.” I spend time in prayer and the Word until my son quietly (I have taught him this trick so he doesn’t wake his sister and mother) opens my office door and jumps on the couch next to me. He knows what I am doing and is ready to have his own “Bible story time” with daddy. I open my iPad to the “Bible App for Kids” that Youversion launched in 2013. (This app has been downloaded over 5 million times, is easy to use and updated with new stories often.) We go through a couple of stories on the app and talk about them for a few minutes. The app actually has a couple of discussion questions built into each story to help facilitate such discussion. After we finish “story time” I ask my son who we might pray for today. We already pray for our family each night before bedtime so this is an additional opportunity to pray for whomever or whatever he wants. We have a few minutes of prayer and are then off to breakfast! A simple 10 minute way to start the day but one with eternal value as my son learns from his daddy what it means to “abide with Christ.” And very soon little sister will be joining us for these early morning meetings! More on what we presently do to encourage her love for Jesus in another post!
A Few Ways to Encourage Your Kids to Spend Time With Jesus:
- Let them see YOU spend time with Jesus
- Encourage them to participate in your time with Jesus
- Use an app or program like Youversion’s Bible App for Kids to help facilitate your quiet time together
- Teach your kids to pray as soon as they are able to comprehend simple language (meal time is great for this)
- Talk often about your time with Jesus and how much it means to you. Kids are always listening and clueing in on what we enjoy or deem important
