I have been a daddy for nearly four years and the joy of parenthood has never gotten old. I love all of the many facets of being a father. Yes I do get tired, cranky. Yes I have moments when patience is tough to find. Don’t we all? But, the joys of fatherhood far outweigh any sacrifice it may require! There is nothing like the kiss and hug of a toddler to make your day! Just about the best thing I could ever hear is one of my little ones saying they love me. This morning my (almost) 2 year old told me she was proud of me. I can live on that bit of encouragement for a while!
When I have the opportunity to rock one of the kids to sleep I whisper in their little ear three things: “Daddy loves you. Daddy is proud of you. I’m sure glad Jesus let me be your daddy.” I want my little ones to know I enjoy them. I want them to know I have fun playing, singing and coloring with them. I want them to know daddy loves bubbles and “driveway chalk” as much as they do. But more than any of these I want them to know I love them, am proud of them and (most of all) am grateful God chose me to be their daddy! Yet even with all of the love I have for my little ones there are times when parenthood wipes me out and I feel inadequate for the job.
There is an incredible amount of energy required to raise kids and raising them right requires even more. But raising our kids is one of the greatest honors, privileges and accomplishments life has to offer. The great news is that we are not left to do this great work alone! Philippians 2:13 says, “It is God who works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” The job of raising Godly children is something Christ intends to happen. He is at work in and through us to make it so! Our job is to have faith and cooperate with what He is doing. This takes the stress off our shoulders! We are to simply cooperate with what God is doing. Doesn’t such a thought make the “hard” days easier!? We can’t “mess things up.” If we have faith, pray and cooperate with God’s work in the lives of our little ones things are going to turn out right!
Be encouraged! God loves you and your children. Parenthood is a good work which He has prepared in advance for you to do (Ephesians 2:10). God will do the work. Enjoy and cooperate with the incomprehensible blessing of the process!
