ENOUGH of the rhetoric. Our world is a dumpster fire! We are in a world of darkness. We live in a world lost in sin. Sin. That’s right sin! “Sin” means “Missing the mark of God’s intention for our life.” We have been missing God’s mark since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. Oh you don’t believe in a Garden of Eden or the Biblical story of creation? Well, how about you come up with a hypothesis more supported by antiquity, textual criticism and the faith of millions. The fact of the matter is simple; the Biblical account of creation has more historical, scientific and theological evidence than anything you have ever come up with in your wildest “scientific” imagination. And yes, that is a generalization but sometimes generalizations are true too!
The problem with the world in which we live is simple; man is a fallen creature. He is sinful. His heart is evil. People are not inherently good. People are inherently bad. Mankind is born with the propensity for complete and total selfishness. In fact, we are born with the desire to be our own god. That’s right, we want to be god himself. This is why we are capable of the greatest sort of depravity in our search for power and control over other human beings.
And the solution to our sin problem? Simple. Jesus Christ. He is the remedy for our sin, wickedness and rebellion against God. Rebellion you say? Yes, rebellion. Because of our sinfulness we are separated from God; we are His enemies. We are destined, as a result, for an eternity separated from Him. We Christians talk about being “saved.” Do you know what we mean by that? We mean Jesus gave His life on a Cross to rescue us from our sin, the power of sin and our rebellion against God Himself.
Education isn’t the answer. We are NOT going to achieve some sort of academic nirvana in which we find the answers to our deepest questions and become so enlightened that we gain mastery over our sin problem. Money is not the answer. We are not going to spend our way out of our dire circumstances before the God of the universe. Government isn’t the answer. There will never be a government of men that can solve the problems which arise out of sin.
The answer is Jesus. And the the church KNOWS this! We know Jesus is the only answer. At least those Christians who are orthodox and still believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ know this. Oh, yes, the Gospel; that is the “Good news” that Jesus came to save us from sin, death and hopelessness. Jesus came to rescue us from the POWER of sin which compels us to rebellion against God and wickedness of all kinds. The church KNOWS the Gospel and we are commanded, called and commissioned by God to tell everyone about it. We are the LIGHT and witness of God to a human race running in the wrong direction. Dear God what in the world are we doing.
Oh doing. Well, in the last few generations we have built buildings with the mantra, “If you build it they will come.” We have raised up Moral Majorities and Christian celebrities and started churches more intent on being cool and accepted by the lost than making any real attempt to reach them with the only answer for their sin and rebellion against God. God help us.
So where to from here? The only answer is a people compelled by faith in a God who exists and rewards those who diligently seek Him. Do we still believe with Mary and Gabriel that “Nothing is impossible with God.” Are there any among us whom the angel might say, “Blessed is she who believes that what God has said to her will be accomplished?” The world doesn’t need Whitfields and Wesley’s as much as average Joe’s and Mary’s who will believe God exists and His Word is true. May we cease being a religion of celebrity. It is time for the people in the pew to again be the people of faith they were intended to be. It is time to live our faith in genuine devotion to a Christ who exists, died and rose again. It is time to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength and tell others that unless they do the same the chaos of their life is eternal! Dear God help us.
