One of the BEST Advent traditions at our house is the “Advent Calendar.” (You can find some of these on Amazon and I will link some of them after the article.) In a nutshell, the Advent Calendar is an opportunity to teach your children the story of Christ’s incarnation over the entire 24 days of Advent. Each day you open a window to reveal another player/part of the story. The purpose is to use the “window” to introduce a conversation about what the “star, shepherd, angel, holy family, etc” meant to the overall narrative of the story of the nativity. For instance, this morning we found a shepherd in our open window and talked with our kids about the place of the shepherds in the story of the birth of Jesus. These are great “teachable moments and the kids love the process! We also place a piece of chocolate in each window and they love that as well!
Advent is a time of anticipation and joy. Take some time to enjoy it with your children this year!
